Beside it, however, also still the dwarf poodle and the Toypudel are to be found. The latter are also called teacup poodles because they are so small that they would fit into a tea cup. However, these dogs can be called torture breeding. The animals are much too small to be able to give birth to young in a natural way. So these puppies are mostly brought into the world by cesarean section.

The nature of the poodle

The poodle itself is an active, especially watchful and faithful dog, that guards and also defends its precinct. It presents itself quite also sporty and is one of the especially intelligent dog breeds. The poodle presents itself proudly and also brings along a proper will to the Retrietierarbeit. He is equipped with a medium stimulus threshold and is therefore also or especially well suited as a family dog. He is a friendly dog, who likes to have his humans around him and is fun for everyone. He is not too bad for any kind of prank and because of his high intelligence he learns different tricks very fast and gladly. Poodles, especially the bigger representatives of their breed, are more and more often found in the field of agility. Here they present themselves as extremely nimble and agile, which makes them increasingly successful here.  All in all, poodles are very well-balanced dogs, who like to show what they can do and want to please their humans at all costs.

The historical background of the poodle

The poodle was used earlier mainly for the hunt from waterfowl as well as for their apport from the water. Also the name of this race comes from there. This was derived from the old-German word puddeln, which means as much as splashing in the water. Later, however, this race lost its hunt-like qualities more and more in the breeding, the joy to and the fun at the Apportieren remained them however until today. At the end of the 19th century, one began only with the quite aimed breeding of the poodles. There were only large poodles and small poodles. They were represented in the colors black and white as well as brown. It was very controversial at that time, where exactly the origin of this breed was. Russia, France and also Germany wanted to claim this for themselves. In the 30's of the 20th century then finally the official recognition of the breed by the FCI followed. In the course of this recognition, France was also determined as the country of origin of this breed. Now also still another size followed, the small poodle. This was followed in the 90's of the last century by the so-called Toy Poodles. Also in the area of the colors a lot has changed. Besides the classic colors black, white and brown, silver and abricht were now also represented. Besides that also red poodles came on the market. Meanwhile there is not only almost every imaginable color, but there are also multi-colored dogs. Just these enjoy great popularity.

Which requirements does a poodle have

Depending on the size of the poodle, the space conditions should of course also be adapted. The urge to move, the joy to retrieve and the intelligence of the dogs must be taken into account in any case. The poodle would like to be occupied, he would like to work and learn, would like to prove his intelligence and would like to spend as much time as possible with his humans. Whether on long walks and hikes or whether with sports. The poodle presents itself as especially willing and eager to work. Also in water the poodle is completely in his element. But it only really gets going when it learns tricks and can show what it can really do. In the area of the fur-care, the poodle is rather undemanding, it doesn't hair and doesn't have to be brushed so often through it either, probably however again and again trimmed and shorn. Otherwise, the poodle would like to enjoy simply its life with its human being, it would like to play and cuddle and would like to be always and everywhere with it dearest.

The poodle and his health

The poodle is in itself, if one proceeds from the original breeding, a quite healthy and robust dog, whom nothing knocks over so fast. Nevertheless, some hereditary illnesses are to be found also here. Beside the HD, from which the large poodles are affected, other illnesses are added with the smaller dogs. For example PRA, the progressive retinal atrophy, which can lead to complete blindness. It is similar with cataract, the cataract. In addition, patella dislocation is becoming increasingly common, especially in small poodles. This is a pathological dislocation of the patella, which causes the affected dogs to begin to limp.  But also the so-called sebadenitis is quite widespread in poodles. This is a disease in which the sebaceous glands are destroyed by the dog's own immune system. This leads to the fact that the hairs are no longer properly supplied. It comes to fur loss.
The perfect person for a poodle is......

Sporty and active, always ready to cuddle, play and joke and satisfy the urge to fetch. In addition, he is consistent and leaves the poodle no freedom of choice. He tries to take this freedom because of his high intelligence. In addition, the perfect human for a poodle should not be averse to leading his dog in agility if necessary. He is also willing to give his poodle a task and gives him a little freedom in fulfilling it. The perfect poodle owner also takes the dog's needs into account in the area of mental workload.

Conclusion

The poodle is not only a perfect family dog, he is also a good companion and willing working dog. Equipped with a good waking instinct, the poodle protects everything that belongs to him and his humans. He is friendly towards strangers, but without being pushy. When playing with its people, however, the temperament can go through with it already times. He is very active and a real clown. What he likes, the poodle knows to demand this also vehemently. Nevertheless, he is not only suitable for beginners and families because of the variety of sizes, he is also a loyal companion for older people and goes through thick and thin with them.
