Dog nutrition: Small sins are allowed

Even when it comes to dog nutrition, the saying goes: small sins are allowed. But what and how much is the dog really allowed to snack on?

Even dogs are allowed to snack now and then - but only if the basic nutrition is right. It must be ensured that your dog absorbs all the important nutrients in the right amounts through daily feeding alone. You can read here how to treat your dog to a small treat without risking health problems.

What can be snacked on?

It is important that the dog does not eat any harmful foods. This also applies to small treats that are fed infrequently. Human food is often too spiced for the dog's stomach. That's why only treats made especially for dogs are recommended to spoil your four-legged friend. With the right ingredients, you can also prepare dog cookies yourself.

Which treats you choose, of course, depends on you and your dog's taste. Treats made for dogs have the advantage that you can often see the ingredients exactly.

How often can the dog snack?

Even if your dog is allowed to be pampered now and then, you should generally be sparing with the treats. Dog owners often lose track of how much they've actually already given the dog. Treats are real calorie bombs: If the dog gets too much, it can quickly become overweight.

Tip: Put the appropriate amount of treats for your dog on a plate in the morning. Feed over the day also only this quantity. If the plate is empty, no more is refilled. In this way, you automatically gain a feeling for how much you have really already fed and keep track.

Showing love in a different way

For dogs, too, love goes through the stomach. But you can show your dog your love just as much by spending playtime together or by doing other things to strengthen your bond with him. After all, spending time with the owner is often the greatest gift for dogs.
